Summer

The summer is coming quickly now, so I have to get into gear. Here is a glimpse of the first pieces coming together:

A nautical combo:

The shirt is 2 patterns mixed together: Spot Fish and Autumn Forest. The short sleeves of Spot Fish, the divided/gathered front panel from Autumn Forest.

The shorts are my first attempt to grade a pattern to a different size. These are Hoola Hoops, starting at size 92, I graded down to 86 and the result is very good.

A skirt with a matching shirt:

The balloons are placed to low, maybe I should put a text above it? The skirt is a first, Saskia LOVES it! The pattern is "Rabbit Dance" from Ottobre, probably one of the easiest skirts to sew: 2 rectangles, sew the sides together, sew the hem en put 4 - 6 rows of smocking elastic in the top. Done.

Embroidery

Because I don't have an embroidery machine (yet), I tried my hand at freehand embroidery on a regular sewing machine. This was my first try and as you can see, I need a lot more practice! Or maybe my clumsiness justifies a real embroidery machine? Anyway, although it took me a long time, it is fun to do and the result is, well, let's say unique.

At first, I used the Silhouette to cut out the parts of a simple flower. This design is simple enough to cut it out just using your scissors, but I wanted to see how this works so I kept it simple. One by one I appliquéd the pieces using a satin stitch.
Then I put wash-away embroidery stabilizer on the cutting mat and had the Silhouette sketch the flower using the sketch pen. I put the stabilizer on the fabric, put stabilizer under the fabric too, and I stitched the lines. I lowered the feed dogs to do this and moved the fabric around as I stitched.

As I said, I need more practice but I liked how it turned out.

De stand

Zo, het is alweer veel te lang geleden dus zet je schrap voor een overload....

Allereerst het Kerstjurkje:

Het patroon is van Ottobre, het was vorig jaar goed bevallen dus deze keer nog maar eens, in een maatje groter. De stof is een Japanse brushed cotton, wat flanelachtig, gekocht bij Miss Matatabi. Mocht je in haar winkel gaan kijken dan wees gewaarschuwd: zorg dat je genoeg tijd hebt...
De print heeft hier en daar een subtiel metaaldraadje, dus dat heb ik in de paspel laten terug komen

Als je goed kijkt kan je het nèt zien.
En ik heb voor het eerst een blinde zoom gemaakt. Dat heeft dus niets om het lijf, ik moet nog wat oefenen met het voetje, maar heus, niets om bang voor te zijn. Het lijkt of je nog steeds een stiksel ziet lopen, maar ik had de zoom wat te enthousiast geperst, je ziet nu te goed tot waar de stof dubbel ligt. In het dragen is het echt "onzichtbaar"

Ik vind ze er schattig uitzien zo, Thomas met zijn matching stropdas.

Nog voor kerst had ik een dunne fleece gekocht om er voor Thomas een kamerjas van te maken. Niet een badjas, maar iets wat hij 's morgens snel over zijn pyjama kan aantrekken (hij is niet zo van "eerst aankleden, dan naar beneden")

Het is maar 128, nog wat groot maar dat geeft niet. Hij kan er goed in lummelen. Patroon van Ottobre.

Deze sweat had ik al heel lang liggen, oorspronkelijk gekocht om een blazerjasje van te maken, maar het kwam er niet van. Maar het was minder dan 1 meter dus ik moest niet te lang meer wachten anders kon ik niets passends meer maken. Het is een mouwloze tuniek-met-capuchon geworden, een makkelijk, leuk en veelzijdig patroon van Ottobre genaamd "Wild Cat"
De sterren heb ik er met textielverf zelf op geschilderd. Ik heb de freezer-paper methode gebruikt, heel makkelijk en het effect is geslaagd, al zeg ik het zelf.
Het patroon beviel zo goed, dat ik nog een exemplaar gemaakt heb:

Ik wilde het iets neutraler van kleur houden, maar de combinatie rood-donkerblauw is misschien wat al te voor de hand liggend, dus heb ik knaloranje afwerking genomen. De familie Vogel is uit flock-folie. Je ziet ook een klein stukje van de geflockte naam en maat.

Om het rood wat aansluiting te geven, Saskia heeft niet veel rood in haar garderobe, maakte ik nog deze top:

Valt het op dat de hartjes onderstboven staan? Had je niet gezien hè? Ach ja, een kniesoor die daarover valt. Het patroon is van Ottobre, Autumn Forest.

Zebras

The fabrics from Nosh Organics are wonderful. They are also pricey, so I had to choose which print to get (getting al the prints I like would cost a fortune) I picked the zebras:

I paired them with a black and white houndstooth, to get a break from the pink. Saskia was in a clown mood....

Coat

Did I say that it is getting cold? I guess that means I had to make a coat for Saskia, toddler coats can be so cute...

A classical pattern with very few details

The shell is a printed denim with some stretch to it, the lining is a quilting cotton and in between a layer of micro fleece for warmth. Next time I will add some details, piping or ribbons, or an appliqué.

Winter dress

It is getting cold. For real.  How about a dress out of a sweater knit?

The fabric comes from a market in The Netherlands, hard to work with because the knit is a bit loose, so the fabric ladders easily. But the drape is beautiful and I am happy with the result.
From the left overs I made a hat and neck sock:

And because they are so easy to make, I made another set with fabric from the left over bin:

T is for Tiger

What do you do when you have no ideas? You copy those of others. Yeah, sometimes you need that to get back into your flow. Thomas doesn't mind though that another boy is walking around with the exact same sweater, as it is pretty cool:

It is my first attempt to cut something complicated with the Silhouette and the first time I imported an image (from a Google search) instead of using one from the Silhouette store. I am not familiar enough with the software to have the machine cut exactly the way I want it, but is is a good start.
